Baby Mario is a character in the Yoshi franchise and later the Mario franchise. He first appears in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, as the infant form of Mario. Baby Mario would later be introduced into the Mario franchise in Mario Golf for the Nintendo 64, in which he is paradoxically a separate character from Mario, something that would be recurring throughout the Mario franchise. Baby Mario was portrayed by Charles Martinet, who also portrayed Mario and various other characters before retiring in 2023.

Yoshi appearances

Yoshi's Island series

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Though Baby Mario is one of the main characters of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, he has a rather passive role, mostly being carried through the levels by different Yoshis. However, some levels have a star, which turns Baby Mario into Superstar Mario temporarily, allowing him to run around at very high speed, relative invincibility, and the ability to float short distances with the cape added to his back.

If Yoshi takes a hit from any enemy or obstacle, Baby Mario starts floating around in a bubble while bawling loudly as the Countdown Timer ticks. Yoshi has to rescue Baby Mario before time expires and hitch Baby Mario safely on his back. If the Countdown Timer does run out, Baby Mario is kidnapped by Kamek's Toadies, also costing Yoshi an extra life.

Yoshi's Island DS

In Yoshi's Island DS, Baby Mario teams up with Yoshi as well as Baby Peach, Baby Donkey Kong, and Baby Wario to save Baby Luigi and the other babies that Kamek had kidnapped while searching for the star children. In the end, Baby Mario and the other baby protagonists are revealed to be the star children.

Yoshi Touch & Go

In Yoshi Touch & Go, Baby Mario has a different role than in the Yoshi's Island series. Baby Mario first falls from the sky, this time held up by balloons, as the player guides him by drawing clouds down to the ground where Yoshi awaits him. After landing on Yoshi's back, Baby Mario rides on him for the remainder of the stage. Baby Mario can still turn into Super Baby in some of the modes, this time with the added ability to shoot an unlimited number of star projectiles.

Mario appearances

Mario Power Tennis

In Mario Power Tennis, Baby Mario makes a cameo alongside Baby Luigi in the first picture of the opening and ending cutscene.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Baby Mario is one of the four main protagonists, along with Mario, Baby Luigi, and Luigi. Statistically, Baby Mario is faster than Mario, but all of his other stats are lower. The pair of brothers team up to rescue Princess Peach from a group of alien invaders known as the Shroobs.

Physical appearance

In the Yoshi franchise, Baby Mario is shown wearing just a diaper and his cap. In the Mario spinoffs, beginning with his introduction in the Nintendo 64 game Mario Tennis, Baby Mario wears a miniature-sized version of Mario's outfit, that being a red shirt and blue overalls. Baby Mario's cap has the same signature "M" emblem and is the same size as Mario's Cap, making the cap somewhat large for Baby Mario's head.

Trivia

  • The Japan only game Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa is sometimes referred to as "Mario Baby" due to that name being applied to a ROM hack of the game.
