Yoshi is used as a steed by Mario, Luigi, and other playable characters on several of their journeys. Yoshi has a long tongue that he uses to eat certain enemies to then convert into Yoshi Eggs. Yoshi can perform a distinct Flutter Jump in which he rapidly kicks his feet to keep himself airborne. Yoshi is also partnered with Birdo in various spinoff games like Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, and they are thought to be romantic partners, but there is no evidence to support this.
Super Smash Bros. appearances
Super Smash Bros.
Yoshi makes his first appearance in a fighting game in the original Super Smash Bros. as a starting playable character.
Yoshi's special moves originate from early Mario and Yoshi titles. His standard special move is Egg Lay, in which he devours his opponents to turn into an egg briefly. Yoshi's up special move involves him throwing an egg. Yoshi's down special move is a Ground Pound. Furthermore, Yoshi's taunt has him look forward and say a little chant while waving both arms, just like his animation in Yoshi's Story if he discovers a special item in the ground. Yoshi's stage entrance involves him appearing out of a Yoshi Egg.
Yoshi is one of the most unique fighters, and he is not generally recommended for beginner players. Yoshi's shielding move involves encasing himself in a Yoshi Egg, and his shield is generally different from other fighters' shields as well. Yoshi also lacks a third recovery jump, which is compensated for his double jump.
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Yoshi returns in Super Smash Bros. Melee as a starting playable character. Yoshi stays relatively unchanged, but he is given a few new visual properties, such as a more realistic dinosaur posture and several unique techniques such as edge-canceled eggs. Although Yoshi can continue to double jump cancel, Yoshi continues to lack a third jump and is still unable to jump out of his shield.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Yoshi returns as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. He is designed similarly to his appearances in the Mario spinoff games, but with more realistic details, like the game's graphics in general. Yoshi's moves are relatively unchanged, but the biggest difference is that his up special move, the Egg Toss, works like a third jump somewhat, as it gives him a little extra time in midair. The change to the Egg Toss move is especially beneficial to Yoshi because the directional air dodge, which helped Yoshi with his recovery, does not return from Super Smash Bros. Melee. Yoshi can still resist knockback during his second jump.
Yoshi's Final Smash is Super Dragon, in which he grows wings and flies around the stage, spitting fireballs at opponents. Super Dragon combines two of Yoshi's abilities from Super Mario World: spitting a few fireballs from eating a Red Shell and flight from a Blue Shell.
Yoshi has a trophy that is awarded each time the Classic Mode is completed by him on any difficulty.
Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary
In Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Yoshi is first seen asleep in the forest. Soon after Link passes Yoshi, Meta Knight's Halberd passes over and drops several Primids. Yoshi awakens and teams up with Link, and both of them fight the Primids.
Yoshi and Link chase after the Halberd, but the ship is too fast for them. One of two events can occur afterward, depending on whether Princess Peach or Princess Zelda was saved by Kirby at the Midair Stadium. If Peach was saved, Bowser will eventually meets up with Peach and creates a False Peach. Yoshi and Link win the battle against False Peach, but Mario notices this in the corner of his eye and assumes that they defeated the real Peach. In response, Mario and Pit go to battle Yoshi and Link. If Princess Zelda was rescued, a similar event occurs, except the roles are swapped with Mario and Pit fighting Yoshi and Link after Mario and Pit have defeated False Zelda.
The defeated duo turn into trophies, which King Dedede picks up using his Cargo. Kirby suddenly arrives to rescue the fighters, and Yoshi and the other four set off to go after the Ancient Minister.
Mario appearances
Super Mario series
Super Mario World
In Super Mario World, Yoshi assists Mario and Luigi on their journey to rescue Princess Toadstool, after he is rescued from an egg that Bowser trapped him in. Riding Yoshi adds a bongo beat to the background music. If Yoshi is hit, he runs off, but Mario and Luigi can jump onto Yoshi's back to mount him again. While running, Yoshi is not mindful of pits and runs into them. Before entering any Ghost House, fortress, or castle, Mario or Luigi jump off of Yoshi and leave him to wait outside until they complete the level.
Mario and Luigi also meet Red Yoshi, Blue Yoshi, and Yellow Yoshi in Star Road. There is also the Wings item, which gives Yoshi the ability to fly.
Super Mario 64
In Super Mario 64, Yoshi can be found on the roof of the Mushroom Castle after collecting all 120 Power Stars, unlocking access to the cannon in the Castle Grounds.
Super Mario Sunshine
In Super Mario Sunshine, set on the tropical island of Isle Delfino, Yoshi assists Mario during various parts of his journey. Yoshi is trapped inside of a Yoshi Egg, but Mario can free Yoshi by feeding him the requested fruit. Besides his long tongue and Flutter Jump, Yoshi can also spray juice to attack. While riding Yoshi, Mario is required to keep him constantly fed with fruit, and Yoshi is colored either orange, pink, or purple, depending on the fruit eaten, and only turns green if he is out of juice, causing him to return into his Yoshi Egg. Yoshi cannot swim in water either, and touching a large body of it similarly causes Yoshi to return to his egg.
In pre-release builds, Yoshi is light-green, regardless of how much juice he has. Yoshi is also depicted green in artwork, in which Mario is seen riding him.
Super Mario 64 DS
It has been requested that this section be rewritten. Reason: Copied from Mario Compendium.
Yoshi found himself to be the primary hero in Super Mario 64 DS. During this adventure, Princess Peach decided to invite Mario, Luigi and even Wario to her castle. Coincidentally, Yoshi was sleeping on the roof of the castle when the trio of heroes arrived. Unfortunately, Bowser had arrived at the castle before Mario, Luigi, and Wario. The Koopa King and his forces had stolen the castle's Power Stars, the magical artifacts that protect Peach's Castle. With the power of these stars, Bowser planned to take over the castle. To do this, Bowser intended to convert the denizens of the worlds accessed via the paintings in Peach's Castle into monsters. With these newfound forces, Bowser was then going to attack the castle, and, potentially, the entire Mushroom Kingdom. With the Power Stars under his control, Bowser captured not only Peach and Toad, but Mario, Luigi, and Wario as well. As such, it was up to Yoshi to free his imprisoned allies and rescue the Princess from Bowser's clutches.
In fact, while Mario himself is required to open Star Doors and, ultimately, face the final confrontation with Bowser, rescuing Luigi and Wario was optional, as Yoshi could discover magical caps that would allow Yoshi to temporarily assume the form and abilities of the other three characters. He could also eat enemies and toss eggs to help him in his quest. Ultimately, with Mario's help (and that of Luigi and Wario, or without), Yoshi managed to help defeat Bowser and acquire the castle's Power Stars. With stability returned to the castle, Peach rewarded the four heroes by baking them all a cake.
New Super Mario Bros.
In New Super Mario Bros., Yoshi appears in some of the minigames, such as Loves Me...?, which returns from Super Mario 64 DS. Yoshi also appears in some added minigames, like Balloon Racing.
Super Mario Galaxy
Yoshi himself does not appear in Super Mario Galaxy – however, there are three notable Yoshi references.
- When starting a file, the player is given the choice of what character head they want to resemble the "planet" that is their save file, and one of the heads is Yoshi's.
- In the Good Egg Galaxy, there is a planet that resembles a Yoshi egg.
- A wooden planet that is carved into the shape of Yoshi's head appears in the Space Junk Galaxy. The mission in which Mario retrieves a star on this planet is even titled "Yoshi's Unexpected Appearance."
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Yoshi reappears in the game's sequel, New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Yoshi only appeared in World 1-3, World 2-5, World 3-2, World 4-5, World 6-4, and World 7-6, making him quite rare. Yoshi makes the same sound as he did in Super Mario World. Green Yoshi, Yellow Yoshi, Light Blue Yoshi, and Pink Yoshi are the Yoshi colors that appear in this game.
When one player is riding a Yoshi, Yoshi drums are added to the music. Yoshi can flutter jump, such as in previous titles, and has his usual tongue ability. He can easily eat an normal enemy such as a Goomba or Piranha Plant. If Yoshi eats a shell enemy, Yoshi can't swallow it, so the player can spit the shell out. If Yoshi eats a Venus Fire Trap, he will be able to spit out a fireball, or he will spit out an ice ball if he eats an ice ball from an Ice Bro. Not only that, but Yoshi can also eat a hammer thrown by a Hammer Bro. and spit it right back. Yoshi can also jump on certain enemies that players wouldn't normally jump on, though it won't affect the enemies in any way. If Yoshi is struck by an enemy without swallowing or jumping on it, he will drop the player and run about until the player regains control of him. If not stopped, Yoshi may run off of a cliff and into a hole.
Berries can be found in the levels that Yoshi appears in, and if Yoshi eats 5 berries, he will lay an egg that holds an item. This happens also if Yoshi eats a Pokey while it is covered in leaves. At the end of a level, past the flagpole, Mario, Luigi, Yellow Toad, and/or Blue Toad will run off, and Yoshi will just wave goodbye.
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Yoshi does appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2. He can eat various fruit in order to change his color and gain power-ups like in Super Mario Sunshine. These abilities include the orange Dash Yoshi, running up walls when he eats a Dash Pepper, a light blue Blimp Yoshi, inflating like a balloon and floating towards virtually unreachable areas when a Blimp Fruit is ingested (similar to Mario's Power Flower ability from Super Mario 64 DS), and when he eats a Glimmer Bulb Berry, he turns into the yellow Bulb Yoshi.
Yoshi has been shown to have the ability to perform flutter jumps, but he lacks the ability to do triple jumps. He can also eat things by targeting them with the Wii Remote, and by pressing the B button, but for a price, players can't use Star Bits while on Yoshi. If the player wants to stop riding Yoshi, he/she must hold down Z and press A. On a side note, Yoshi can swim in this game, but he can't dive underwater. Also, Yoshi can't do ground pounds, which is ironic, since he was able to do ground pounds in earlier games.
Also, like in the past games, if Mario takes damage while on Yoshi, Yoshi will run off.
After collecting the first Power Star from the Yoshi Star Galaxy for the mission Saddle up with Yoshi, a Yoshi Egg appears on Starship Mario's nose. Like in Delfino Plaza from Super Mario Sunshine, Yoshi is playable in the hub.
Mario Kart series
Yoshi is a playable character in every Mario Kart games, usually as a lightweight character.

Mario Strikers Charged
In Mario Strikers Charged, Yoshi returns as a balanced captain again. If Yoshi performs his Mega Strike, he flies up into the air, bearing wings like in Super Mario World. Yoshi then draws in a lot of breath, and as Yoshi breathes out, he launches the ball into the net with a lot of force.
Mario Hoops 3-on-3
In Mario Hoops 3-on-3, Yoshi is an All-Around character, in contrast to his speedy nature in other sports games. His Special Shot is the Flutter Dunk, in which he holds the ball as he flutters toward the hoop, leaving a rainbow trail. If Yoshi uses Flutter Dunk outside the three-point line, he throws the ball to another teammate, with a rainbow trail still following behind.
Yoshi appearances
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, set long ago before Baby Mario and Baby Luigi were adults, Yoshi is first seen in the start-up cutscene, out for a stroll on Yoshi's Island. Baby Mario then suddenly drops onto Yoshi's back miraculously, following a long fall from the sky, where the Stork had been attacked by Kamek while out to deliver Baby Mario and Baby Luigi to their parents. A map also drops from the sky, which Yoshi is unable to figure out, and he goes to talk to the other Yoshis.
As the Yoshis convene, they are in an uproar over what to do about Baby Mario. They eventually agree to go on a journey to deliver Baby Mario his parents and use a "relay system" to also track where Baby Luigi is.
In gameplay, Yoshi is the playable character of the first level of each world, except World 6, where he is also used in the final level King Bowser's Castle. In the concluding engagement Yoshi first battles Baby Bowser in a playroom before Kamek arrives to use his magic to turn Baby Bowser colossal. For the second part of the battle, Yoshi has to use Giant Eggs to attack and eventually defeat Baby Bowser.
Yoshi's Story
In Yoshi's Story, Baby Bowser steals the Yoshi's Super Happy Tree and converts their island into a storybook. Yoshi and the other seven Yoshis are babies, and after they hatch from their eggs, they go on a quest to recover the Super Happy Tree, return Yoshi's Island to normal, and defeat Baby Bowser.
Other crossover games
The Legend of Zelda series
Yoshi appears in the form of a doll in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Yoshi and a few other Mario characters have portraits inside of Hyrule Castle that can be seen from the Castle Courtyard.
Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes
Yoshi appears in Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes alongside Mario as dolls on Otacon's desk. When the doll was shot it made the famous Yoshi sound and 1up sound effect. This refilled health for Snake.
In other media
Super Mario World television series
Yoshi is one of the main characters in the Super Mario World television series regularly. He is portrayed by Andrew Sabiston, who went on to portray Diddy Kong in the Donkey Kong Country television show years later. Yoshi has the personality of a very young child, so he speaks in the manner of one, usually in third-person. Yoshi is often afraid of many things, such as Boos and water. Yoshi's design in the show changed over time to better match his video-game design.
In the series finale "Mama Luigi", the plot tells how Luigi found Yoshi after being ambushed by Bowser while on vacation. After Luigi cracks Yoshi's egg, Yoshi emerges as a baby and sees Luigi as his mother. The episode continues to mostly adapt to Super Mario World, as Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi travel to King Koopa's Neon Castle to save Princess Toadstool.
Nintendo Adventure Books
Yoshi appears in the Nintendo Adventure Books, where his dialogue consists of words that rhyme with "orp", as he does not speak English there like in the cartoon.
Super Mario Adventures
Yoshi also features prominently in the Super Mario Adventures comic serial printed in Nintendo Power. Yoshi inhabits Yoshi Village, where is the chairman of the Dino Chamber of Commerce. Yoshi is searching for a group of missing Yoshi Villagers whom Bowser has captured.
Super Mario Bros. film
Yoshi also appears in the live-action Super Mario Bros. film. He takes the form of a realistic animatronic dinosaur, very much like a smaller version of velociraptors from Jurassic Park, instead of a live-action animated character. Although Yoshi looks much different than usual, he still shares some resemblance, particularly from his long tongue. Yoshi is downsized to a point that Mario cannot ride him. He is also King Koopa's pet and befriends Daisy at one point.
Abilities
Yoshi has a wide variety of powers and abilities. Super Mario World introduced some of Yoshi's abilities, namely his long tongue, which he can use to grab enemies and items and swallow them whole.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is the first appearance of several of Yoshi's abilities. He can now produce Yoshi Eggs by swallowing enemies, which he can also decide to spit out instead. Yoshi can carry up to six eggs with him and aim before throwing them. Yoshi also receives the Flutter Jump, allowing him to flutter in the air briefly and jump farther than Mario and Luigi. Yoshi is also able to perform the Ground Pound, in which he pounds objects below him; the ability would be later used by Mario regularly since Super Mario 64.
Yoshi can become other forms, starting as early as Winged Yoshi in Super Mario World. In both the Yoshi platforming series and Yoshi's Island series, many of Yoshi's transformations are based on vehicles, such as a Train or a Car in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island or either a Boat or a Balloon in Yoshi Topsy-Turvy.
In several Mario sports titles like the Mario Tennis series and Mario Superstar Baseball, Yoshi excels in the speed statistic. Yoshi has high acceleration in the Mario Kart series.
Speech
There are several appearances in which Yoshi does not have the ability to talk. Yoshi has the capability of speech in some media, like the Super Mario World cartoon, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, the Paper Mario series, and the obscure Japanese Mario Paint ad. In Mario Kart Wii, Yoshi can talk in a squeaky voice.
In Super Mario Adventures, Yoshi's dialogue consists mainly of his own name, something that has been frequent of Yoshis in general since Yoshi's Story.
