Bulbasaur is a Grass-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III. It evolves into Ivysaur starting at level 16, then into Venusaur beginning at level 32.
Biology
It is a quadrupedal green creature resembling a dinosaur, with a large plant bulb on its back. It has light green skin with some dark green spots. Bulbasaurs most notably have large bulbs planted on their on their back, where it had been planted at birth, according to Pokédex entries.
The bulb on a Bulbasaur's back grows steadily larger as the Bulbasaur matures. It contains a seed that uses photosynthesis to supply Bulbasaur with energy. Its bulb is also used to store the energy absorbed by the seed, which can be used when it is necessary. It is assumed that when a Bulbasaur collects enough energy in its bulb, it will evolve into an Ivysaur.
Appearances
In the Super Smash Bros. series, a Bulbasaur is only ever featured in the form of a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In the former game, the player can obtain the trophy from the Lottery by spending Smash Coins.
Role in Pokémon games
Core series

In Pokémon Red Version and Pokémon Blue Version, the player may choose Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle as their first partner Pokémon. If the player chooses a Bulbasaur, the protagonist’s rival will choose a Charmander, since Charmander have a type advantage over Bulbasaur. The three original starters are available in the enhanced remakes, Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version.
In Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition, the player begins with a Pikachu as their first partner Pokémon instead of Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle. A Bulbasaur becomes available later, however, as a gift from a non-player character in Cerulean City, following the storyline of the anime, Pokémon the Series.
Bulbasaur's Grass-type moves are particularly effective against Ground, Rock, and Water-type Pokémon, but Psychic, Fire, Ice, and Flying-type moves are particularly effective against them. Attacks of the Fighting, Water, Electric, and Electric types do little damage to Bulbasaur, and Bulbasaur do little damage to other Grass and Poison types, as well as to Fire, Flying, Bug, Steel, or Dragon types. All other types have no particular advantage or disadvantage when facing Bulbasaur.
Bulbasaur has an advantage in battles against earlier Gym Leader battles in Kanto. The first two Gym Leaders are Brock, who uses Rock-type Pokémon, and Misty, who uses Water-type Pokémon, and both types are weak to Bulbasaur's Grass-type moves. The third and fourth Gym Leaders are Lt. Surge, an Electric-type specialist, and Erika, a Grass-type specialist, and both of them do not have an advantage in battle against Bulbasaur and their evolved forms.
A Bulbasaur's reasonably high Special Attack and Special Defense statistics is because it has strong Grass-type moves, such as Vine Whip and Razor Leaf, and are also resistant to such types of moves. A Bulbasaur's standard Attack statistic is quite poor, meaning that Bulbasaur's physical attacks like Tackle are relatively weak.
Bulbasaur have the ability to undergo evolution, a metamorphic change within a Pokémon caused by gaining experience in battle, twice. They can evolve first into their middle forms, Ivysaur, from level 16 onwards, and again into Venusaur, their final forms, beginning at level 32, with both evolutions giving them a significant power boost in all areas. Bulbasaur, like most unevolved Pokémon, learn moves at a faster rate than their evolved forms. After they learn new moves, they can simply be allowed to evolve, taking advantage of both the advanced techniques and the power increase.
Spinoffs
Bulbasaur are one of the random Pokémon available in Pokémon Stadium, as a prize for defeating every Gym Leader and member of the Elite Four.
In Pokémon Snap, Bulbasaur are found along the River, and three Ditto disguised as Bulbasaur in the Cave.
A Bulbasaur also appears in Hey You, Pikachu! and Pokémon Channel.
Role in other games
Super Mario Maker
A Bulbasaur is one of the Pokémon costumes in Super Mario Maker.

Etymology
The name Bulbasaur is a blend of "bulb", from the large bulb on its back, and "dinosaur." The Japanese name for Bulbasaur, Fushigidane, is a compound of 不思議 (fushigi, lit. "mystery" or "mysterious"), and 種 (tane, lit. "seed"). Additionally, だ (da) is the plain form of です (desu), and ね (ne) is used to seek an agreement from the listener, making "Fushigidane" literally "isn't it a mystery?" The name Bulbasaur refers to the species as a whole, as well as individual characters in the games, anime and manga.
Trivia
- Bulbapedia is named after Bulbasaur and features a simplistic design of Bulbasaur's bulb on its back.
