Pauline is a character. She first appeared in the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong. She is the first damsel-in-distress whom Mario has gone on a journey to rescue. Pauline was relatively common in the Donkey Kong series and has become a recurring character in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series, but she was largely absent from the Mario franchise until the Nintendo Switch era, with playable appearances such as Mario Golf: Super Rush and Super Mario Party Jamboree.

Pauline is a brunette woman (blonde in earlier appearances) who wears a red mid-length dress. She is also not averse to all forms of makeup, which is particularly evident in her almost obtrusive red lips. In later appearances, Pauline has also been seen wearing yellow earrings and a bracelet of the same color.

In Donkey Kong, Pauline is kidnapped by the title character, and Mario (then still Jumpman) sets out to rescue Pauline. Meanwhile, Pauline is by no means idle and provides her rescuer with all sorts of bonus items while he tries to reach Donkey Kong via the scaffolding.

Pauline made a rather minor guest appearance three years later in Pinball (ARC, 1984), where, in a bonus game, Mario is required to carry the lovely beauty unharmed across a precipice on a kind of platform. In the following decade, things fell quiet for Mario's girlfriend of the early 1980s. It wasn't until 1994 that she reappeared, in her old role as Donkey Kong's kidnapping victim, in the game of the same name - Donkey Kong (GB)|Donkey Kong ('94) - which was released for the Game Boy in 1994.

To avoid unnecessarily fueling Princess Toadstool's jealousy, Mario—at least as far as players know—stayed completely away from Pauline for the next twelve years, only attempting to rescue her again in the fall of 2006, exactly a quarter of a century after the first kidnapping, when Donkey Kong chose her as a third victim. This time, the plumber is aided by robot versions of himself, the Mini Marioss. Accordingly, the accompanying game is also called Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Mini Marios. Here, we can admire Pauline for the first time in 3D graphics, and one can also objectively observe that the twenty-five years have seemingly passed her by without a trace.
